The Fort Garland Revatilization Committe was created to do just that, revitalize our community. The FGRC donated the funds for another 501c charity that provides scholarships for our students. We engage in beautification efforts at our post office, cemetary, and veteran's memorial. We also donate to other efforts like the Senior Lunches inititave.
Looking to the future, we want your input. What can be done to bring more culture, fun, and business to Fort Garland? Have we, as a town, left something we should bring back? Is there something new we can add?
For over 3 decades the FGRC has been volunteering and providing charity for Fort Garland. We are looking forward to many more years of doing the same.
We are a Census Designated Place looking to grow into a town that residents can rely on and be even more proud of.
Grants are crucial to the functioning of the FGRC. Several of our members train in grant writing and work to acquire the funds to allow us to serve our community.
We support local charities like the Senior Lunches program each year. We beautify locations around town. We also ask our visitors for direct feedback when they visit the Entrada Welcome Center.
From planting flowers, to the mundane like keeping the heat and lights on, the FGRC ensures the Visitor Center is a resource for locals and travelers. We direct newcomers to local businesses and attractions around town and Costilla County in general. We also fix the plumbing each Spring because it is a little old.
Stay tuned for expanding service for Fort Garland. We are in the planning stages, but will announce some new utility for our little town soon.
A trip to Fort Garland isn't complete without a visit to the fort itself. See the artifacts of the difficult lives these soldiers lived. Approximately 200 soldiers from here met up with other troops for the battle of Glorieta Pass. This battle turned out to be the final attempt by the Confederacy to move West.
Afterwards try one of our local restaurants and please get a souvenir from our shops. Of course we want you to stop at The Visitor Center for any information and a welcome pit stop. Our veteran's memorial park is only a few minutes away from the center of town.
The fort was built in 1858 and is managed today by History Colorado. You can learn about the impact of American colonialism, the native Ute people, the Buffalo Soldiers, and see many artifacts of the soldiers' lives.
Visit our town and browse our souvenir shops. We have several restaurants, and are the gateway to the San Luis Valley.
During the summer season we are open from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. for visitors. We have booklets, flyers for attractions and maps. We also offer the cleanest public restrooms in town. They are handicapped accessible.
We are honored to assist with the Costilla County Memorial Park that is dedicated to local veterans.
One of Fort Garland's best family friends, Weeds poses in front of our longest running restaurant, The All-Gon. You might think it is a play on the idea that your dinner will soon be all gone. It probably will be, but it is actually a combination of names of two of Fort Garland's families, Allaart and Gonzales. Whether you fancy some Italian, Mexican, or Americana fare, the All-Gon does not disappoint. Don't forget to save room for the delicious deserts.
